Our view of Europe's bridges

A good trip begins with curiosity. And with information that can be classified.

About our editorial work

routes-informores is a German-language information portal about road bridges in Europe. We are aimed at travelers who want to not only cross over, but also understand what they see in front of them.

We separate the description of a building from editorial travel ideas. Changing information such as tariffs or closures belong in the hands of the respective operators.

care

Explain technical terms, make connections visible and identify the limits of representation.

sincerity

No booking promises, no made-up reviews and no confusion with an operator website.

Practical travel advice

In front of the bridge
the planning begins.

A well-prepared crossing does not require long checklists. What is crucial is the right questions about the vehicle, route and current operating situation.

For self-planned car tripsNo booking or toll processing

Three things ahead
count the departure.

The following information is a guide. The respective operator publishes binding rules.

Vehicle & toll

Check the appropriate category

For toll connections, the type of vehicle, dimensions or trailer may be relevant for the classification. Compare the conditions for your actual vehicle combination.

  • Have dimensions and vehicle documents ready
  • Read the tariff conditions completely
  • Check payment options with the operator

Weather & Operations

Pay attention to the situation on the day of travel

Exposed bridges react to wind and weather. Construction sites and operational restrictions may affect the crossing. The current reports and on-site signage are decisive.

  • View traffic reports before departure
  • Follow instructions for tall vehicles
  • Make alternative travel plans

Directions & stay

Plan breaks on land

A highway bridge is not a vantage point to stop. Plan photo stops and breaks only in approved, safely accessible locations away from the roadway.

  • Research parking options separately
  • Respect access rules on the shore
  • Arrange accommodation and arrival independently

Specifically: Denmark–Sweden

For your journey
across the Øresund.

Bridge and tunnel are part of an overall connection. Check conditions for the entire passage, not just the visible part of the bridge.

Before departure

At the connection

About routes-informors

Curiosity about architecture.
Clarity on the go.

We view European road bridges as structures and as parts of a journey. Our goal is to provide an understandable classification - without turning editorial information into a booking offer.

Our perspective

Not just from
Shore to shore.

Bridges tell about terrain, traffic routes and constructive decisions. One look at the ropes, another look at the pillars: a familiar street connection turns into a legible structure.

We explain these connections for people without any prior knowledge of engineering. Clear descriptions do not replace technical documentation or official travel information.

PylonSeileBrückendeck
How forces are transmitted: from the deck via the ropes to the pylon. Simplified principle, no construction drawing.

Editorial principles

Comprehensible instead
omniscient.

We indicate where the description ends and a travel idea begins.

care

Explain, don't impress.

Technical terms are given an understandable explanation. We describe designs based on their load-bearing principle, not based on unsubstantiated superlatives. Schematic representations are marked as such and are not navigation aids.

integrity

Separate information and offer.

We are neither bridge operators nor ticket brokers. Route ideas are non-binding editorial suggestions. Operator links are used for further research and do not mean an official partnership.

corrections

Make information comprehensible.

If you discover an inconsistency, please provide us with the affected statement and an appropriate source. You should always check changing data such as prices and blockings directly with the operator.

Question for the editors

Bridge portraits · Europe

Large spans.
Own stories.

Straits, river mouths and deep valleys present different tasks. The construction of a bridge is a response to its location.

In focus · Denmark / Sweden

The Øresund Bridge

The connection between the Copenhagen area and Malmö is more than a bridge. From the Danish shore it leads through the Drogden Tunnel to the artificial island of Peberholm. This is followed by the bridge to Sweden.

Impressive design

Understand the construction

Why the ropes?
run diagonally.

In a cable-stayed bridge, tensioned cables connect the bridge deck directly to the high pylons. The ropes absorb tensile forces and transfer part of the load to the pylons. These transfer the forces to the underground via their foundation.

The long horizontal line of the access viaducts and the striking pylons characterize the view over the water. This description of the effect is an editorial classification, not a technical evaluation.

Prepare the trip

The sea is part
the route.

The exposed location makes current wind and operational reports relevant for planning. Follow the instructions for your vehicle and plan viewing breaks at suitable locations on land.

Perspectives on Europe.

France · Seine estuary

Pont de Normandie

Here too, stay cables dominate the picture. The bridge spans the Seine estuary between the Le Havre area and Honfleur. The transition between the wide river area and the long access roads is interesting.

Travel idea: Combine the crossing with a stay on the Norman coast. Check access, tolls and local parking regulations in advance.

France · Tarn Valley

Millau viaduct

A series of slender pillars and slanting cables carry the bridge deck over the valley. Unlike the Øresund, it is not the open water surface that forms the decisive spatial reference, but rather the relief of the terrain.

Trip idea: Explore the valley view from a designated viewing spot. Do not stop on the motorway or the hard shoulder.

Copenhagen → Øresund → Malmö

Three stages,
Your own rhythm.

The sequence is a travel idea, not a finished schedule. Choose the duration and stopovers that suit your journey.

Arrive · Denmark

Copenhagen as a starting point

Take advantage of a stay in the Copenhagen area to prepare for your onward journey. If you explore the city on foot or by public transport, you can leave your car in a designated place.

  • Agree on accommodation and parking conditions
  • Have vehicle data ready for tariff comparison
  • Check operating messages before continuing your journey

On the go · The connection

From the tunnel to the bridge

In the direction of Sweden, the Drogden Tunnel is followed by the island of Peberholm and the bridge section. The change from the closed tunnel to the open sea space makes the sequence of structures tangible.

  • Concentrate on the road and traffic flow
  • No photo or stopping stops on the connection
  • Follow current instructions and signage

Onward travel · Sweden

Malmö and the coast

After the crossing, Malmö can be planned as a separate stage. Only publicly accessible, legally accessible places on land can be considered for a look back at the bridge.

  • Check local parking and access regulations
  • Leave time for a break away from the transit
  • Research other destinations in Skåne independently
